Use the lightest tool that solves the problem
Many useful tweaks no longer require root. Android settings, a flexible launcher, Shizuku-supported tools, and carefully chosen ADB commands can change behavior without modifying the system partition.
Change one thing at a time and keep notes. That makes it much easier to undo a setting, isolate battery drain, or recover from an app conflict.
